In his book The Symphony of LIfe, Donald Hatch Andrews says, "A spirit of harmony pervades the universe." He says all things are harmonious vibrations. All things are part of one harmonious vibration that is the universe. In Hinduism this universal harmonious vibration is expressed as OM or AUM. It is a musical tone that expresses the One Consciousness that is all that is. By singing AUM we are attuning ourselves to the Universal Consciousness that is singing life into expression in every moment.
Andrews goes on to say that science is making a startling new discovery - that the basic reality of our universe is not matter but music. He provides the following beautiful, perspective changing and insightful metaphor for what is happening within the basic elements of the universe:
"If we could attune our ears to listen to what goes on inside the atom, we would become aware of music, like great rolling organ music all about us, intermingling melody and harmony. One atom sings and it is answered by music in all the neighboring atoms. IT IS IN THIS MUSIC THAT WE FIND THE REAL SIGNIFICANCE OF LIFE AND THE SIGNIFICANCE OF THE UNIVERSE."
Let's contrast this to something Albert Einstein said, "Concerning matter we have all been wrong. What we have called matter is energy, whose vibration has been lowered as to be perceptable to the senses. There is no matter."
And so the basic reality of our universe is not matter at all but a universal harmonic vibration that is music. The One Universal Consciousness that is singing life into expression every moment.
Also consider the words of physicist Michio Kaku, "The universe is a symphony of strings, and the mind of God that Einstein elegantly wrote about thirty years ago would be cosmic music resonating through eleven dimension hyperspace." In string theory all particles (matter) are vibrations.
And so ancient Hinduism, the practice of which goes back even beyond recorded history, understood something fundamental about the universe that we are only now coming again to understand - there is cosmic music and we may attune ourselves to it.
We are beginning to learn again what Shakespere also knew, "The earth has music for those who listen." We are at the end of an age. These are transcendent, transformational times. Completely new thinking, ways of feeling and being in the world are becoming more and more necessary. We are on the verge of a marvelous transition. Part of this transition is to begin to see and understand that we are at the end of the age of materialism, the age of seeing a scientific world view where matter is the only objective reality. To begin to understand that the scientific paradigm of materialism led to, or in fact created, the economic paradigm of materialism. Our current economic materialistic paradigm says that the acquiring of things is the purpose of life. All around us we are relentlessly propagandized to believe this, but we as one humankind everywhere around the world opening to the reality of music as all that we are, all that is. This is a key part of the aborning new transcendent world.
Sing peace and the universe sings with you. Sing peace and the world transforms. The earth has music - listen!
